Desperate for a thoroughbred, the Red Sox stable looks empty again

The Houston Astros, leading 2-0 in the best of five series, meet the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of Major League Baseball's American League Division Series at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, on Sunday, October 8, 2017 (10/8/17).

Astros starter Dallas Keuchel continued his postseason success with a solid outing against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the American League Division Series.

If the Astros win: Verlander went 5-0 with a 1.06 ERA in five starts with the Astros, so if they win it probably means he pitched well, a good sign for the rest of the postseason that his September run wasn't just a result of facing some struggling offenses (four of his five starts came against the Mariners and Angels). He became the ninth player (Babe Ruth did it twice) and first Astros player to hit three home runs in a postseason game. They gave up two runs in the first inning of both games and neither of their starting pitchers were able to get out of the sixth inning.

The Red Sox counter with Chris Sale on the mound. However, in spite of how terrific he has been throughout his Major League Baseball tenure, Sale has never won a Cy Young award, finishing as high as third back in 2014.

Nunez missed 19 of Boston's last 20 regular-season games with what the team called a sore knee.

The Red Sox were slaughtered at Minute Maid Park and did not even look like they belonged on the same field as the Astros. The right-hander also went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA against the Yankees this year and with NY starter Sonny Gray struggling, Bauer looks like the safer DFS bet today.

The Red Sox will be looking to Fister to extend their season. The score would stay 2-1 until the top of the fourth when the Red Sox would get runners on the corners with no outs.

"We have talked openly about the resilience, we know perfectly well where we are in this series", Farrell said. The second homer for the Astros in the game came in the third inning off the bat of George Springer, a solo shot just over the wall in right field. Drew Pomeranz surrendered four earned runs over two innings to take the loss. The Red Sox and Game 3 starter Doug Fister will plot for Houston during a workout at Fenway Park before that series resumes Sunday. The Red Sox are trying prove there's life after David Ortiz.

"This one's on me", Sale said.

The good news is that Sale will be available to start a potential Game 5, and maybe in relief for a potential Game 4-and he will know what to expect.

"It's just a matter of going out there and getting in a rhythm and, unfortunately, it's taken me a little bit to get in a rhythm sometimes", Fister said.

"We couldn't really script it any better", Keuchel said. Game 1 saw Houston win in a commanding way, with the final score 8-2. Mitch Moreland scored on the play to make it 2-1 Astros, and if Reddick's throw was late, the Red Sox would have had the momentum and a player in scoring position.

The curse-breakers boasted Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling, a horse that said bad leg be damned, I'm running anyways.
